After nearly three years of discussion on film tourism around the world I’m not entirely sure anybody has a clear understanding of what it is. Everyone seems to be able to come up with examples i.e. a location owner selling tickets or a hotel advertising it is near the said location. However, there seem to be few examples of implemented strategy in promoting film tourism. Of course everybody mentions New Zealand, but if that has a working model why isn’t anyone implementing it elsewhere? Perhaps this is because various economic development agencies around the world feel that the main responsibility lies with someone else.

The report last year ‘Stately Attraction‘ for the UK screen agencies by Olsberg|SPI provided good examples on areas that can be developed but I would like to come up with a working proposal that would be achievable with minimal effort.

Anyway, I am setting out on the road to Film Tourism strategy. I will endeavour to support my arguments for what I think it is and how it can help regions develop.
